The Complete Canadian Small Business Guide

Early on in my career as a CA, I began writing articles and generally trying to be noticed as a small business authority. I then thought bigger. What could establish me better as an SME authority than to write a book for entrepreneurs?

Of course first I had to check out the local book stores for the competition.

Initally I was encouraged. What I saw could be very much improved upon. That is until I picked up a first edition of The Complete Canadian Small Business Guide by Douglas and Diana Gray. Douglas, a lawyer by training, and Diana, a business owner and consultant, have collaborated on a number of books for business owners. This fabulously practical and easy to read title is now in its 3rd printing and I’m sure there will be more editions.

Here’s the table of contents. You can see it has good breadth.
1. Starting a Small Business
2. Business Planning
3. Understanding Financial Statements
4. Selecting Professional Advisors
5. Legal Considerations
6. Tax Considerations
7. Buying a Business
8. Buying a Franchise
9. Location and Leases
10. Raising Financing
11. Personnel
12. Business Communication Equipment
13. Marketing
14. Export/Import
15. Credit and Collection
16. Understanding the Litigation Process
17. Insolvency, Bankruptcy and Receivership
18. Patent, Trademark, Copyright, and Industrial Design
19. Time and Stress Management
20. Using the Internet for Business Success
21. Insuring Your Business's Future
22. Time and Stress Management

Given there was little room for improvement on the bookshelf, I took another course. I became involved in various business champion organizations, continued to write articles, and developed an electronic data base of business solutions.

This arsenal of know how was used to support the consulting side of my practice, and was adapted and marketed as InfoTools to other software developers.

Today, after learning and growing with the concept of proprietary archives of business solution, InfoTools have been incorporated into Idea! to create the Archive Software series. You might say its my lemonade...as in "If you have been dealt lemons, make lemonade"

In any event, if you are looking for a handy desk reference, there is no better Canadian, practical SME reference book out there.
